Nintendo Co. said Wednesday that it will launch its new hand-held, 3-D gaming console in the U.S. market on March 27 at a price tag of $250.
The 3DS will view 3D
content without the need for special glasses. Nintendo is gearing to hold onto to it's strong lead in handheld gaming especially since a lot of people have been using their smartphones more and more to play games.
Like the existing DS console, the 3DS
features two screens. The lower touch screen is used to help players
control the game, while the upper screen renders the game in 3-D images,
the scale of which can be controlled by the user, or turned off
completely.
The console will also add a control called the Circle Pad, which provides 360 degrees of movement direction.
Many analysts are looking to new devices
like the 3DS to help boost the video game sector, which had a
challenging year in 2010 as game sales declined at traditional retail
outlets thanks to more competition from digital channels.
$250 is a high price. You can buy a whole console for less than that but it is Nintendo and if anybody can do a handheld right it's them for sure. Plus the 3D capability is something that will make it very competitive in the market. Especially if it functions exacting the way it should. Let's be honest here Nintendo is competing with the Apple iPhone more than anything else and this should determine if they are going to stay above the curve and I think they are in good shape
Nintendo will have 30 3DS titles available in the first three months after the console’s launch.
They include new Nintendo titles such as “Pilotwings Resort” and “Steel
Diver,” as well as third-party titles from publishers such as
Electronic Arts Inc., Capcom, Lucas Arts, Konami and Ubisoft.
Hardware
- It has two screens; the top screen is a 3.53 in (90 mm) 5:3 3D screen with a resolution of 800×240 pixels (400×240 pixels per eye) that is able to produce a three-dimensional effect (one without 3D glasses), while the bottom screen is a 3.02 in 4:3 non-3D resistive touch panel with a resolution of 320×240 pixels.
- The 3DS weighs approximately 230 grams (8.1 oz) and, when closed, is 134 mm (5.3 in) wide, 74 mm (2.9 in) broad, and 21 mm (0.83 in) thick.
- The system will support a 2.4 GHz 802.11 Wi-Fi connectivity with enhanced security.
- Nintendo 3DS features sophisticated anti-piracy technology which Nintendo believes is able to significantly curb video game piracy, which had increasingly depressed the handheld market with the proliferation of cheap flash memory and the rise in illegal file sharing.
- An included cradle allows for faster downloads and uploads, and will act as a charger.
- The system features several additions to the design of the original DS, including a slider on the side of the device that adjusts the intensity of the 3D effect, a round nub analog input called the "Circle Pad", an accelerometer, and a gyroscope.
- The 3DS has two cameras on the outside of the device, capable of taking 3D photos, as well as a camera positioned above the top screen on the inside of the device which faces the player, capable of taking 2D photos and capturing 2D video; all cameras have a resolution of 640×480 pixels (0.3 megapixel).
