Comic Books That Should Be Television Shows!

Let's face it! I don't think there will be a summer where there is no big comic book adaptation being placed on our movie screens. There are all types of comic book properties being bought up like crack in New Jack City because they are lucrative if done right. Spiderman, Iron Man and Batman are some examples of a comic book hero coming to your screen and setting off a new blockbuster franchise that makes movie studios millions of dollars. Now I am a fan of the "super hero" genre of movies especially when they are done as exceptionally well. Christopher Nolan has proven it can be done with the genius that is "The Dark Knight". However, there are some comic books where the story would be best suited for the television medium. Sometimes you need to invest a little more time into the world and characters that are created to fully appreciate the story taking place and 1hr and 30 mins is just not gonna cut it. So here is my list for the comic books that should be television shows!

1. 100 Bullets
100 Bullets: First Shot, Last Call TPB (2000) ...Image via WikipediaYou’re given 100 untraceable bullets, a gun, and the name of the person who screwed you over and royally ruined your whole existence. So what do you do now? Over one hundred issues, Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso created one of the more unique, cool neo-noir comics of all time. They weaved each individual tale of revenge into one big conspiracy.  A very satisfying read and sure to be an even more delicious of a series. Much too complex for the big screen but I would love to see this on the small screen any day.

                         2. Runaways
This series created by Brian K. Vaughan is currently on the list for being made into a major motion picture but I think it would work so much better as a television series. The story is about teenagers who discover their parents are the world's scariest and most evil supervillians and they band together to stop them. They don't wear over the top costumes and they have no super hero names. The story all lies in the interpersonal relationships and heartbreak that takes place within the team. I don't think a movie will give you enough time to capture that.

3. Preacher

I would love to see this developed into a series. Preferably with HBO which I heard was a possibility but that was years ago. Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer, a down-and-out preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer was accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis in an incident which killed his entire congregation and flattened his church. Genesis, the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon, is an infant with no sense of individual will. However, as it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, it might have enough power to rival that of God Himself. Custer, driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, goes on a journey across the United States attempting to (literally) find God, who abandoned Heaven the moment Genesis was born. If written and produced right this is the type of series that could surely be as big a hit as True Blood.

4. Fables
The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as "Fables" – who have been forced out of their Homelands by "The Adversary" who has conquered the realm. The Fables have traveled to our world and formed a clandestine community in New York City known as Fabletown. Fables who are unable to blend in with human society (such as monsters and anthropomorphic animals) live at "the Farm" in upstate New York. Its filled with humor and heart. It is also a refreshing change for television that is sure to pull in a lot of curious viewers. If done right I smell Emmy!
                                        5.  Ultra
This Luna Brothers creation was a funny combination of super heroines and Sex and the City. I like the idea of the chick that could kick ass on the streets but couldn't find a date at the end of the day. Plus what better way to fill my Sex in the City void that HBO has left in my heart! And no the movies don't count because they sucked!

6. Hack/Slash
If/When Supernatural on CW has finished it's run can I suggest the cool idea of developing Hack/Slash! The focus of the series is on a horror victim, Cassie, who survives her slasher movie style attack and strikes back at the monsters, known as "slashers", with Vlad, a disfigured "gentle giant" who frequently wears a gas mask. They travel from town to town tracking would be killers and disposing of them. However, this could easily go into cheese ball territory in the wrong hands so you need someone with a gritty sensibility to helm the reigns on this one.

7. Black Widow

OK it was cool to see Scarlett Johansson take on the role but one fight scene is just not enough for me. It seems as if this character is begging for a weekly action series that we can sink our teeth into. Slowed aging, combined with Natasha storied past as a Soviet operative with false memories, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and a superhero opens up endless possibilities for flashbacks interwoven into contemporary espionage adventures — or entire arcs set in different decades. Throw in guest appearances by her one-time love interest Hawkeye, and I am in heaven.

8. Sandman
The Sandman is a comic book series written by Neil GaimanGaiman has summarized the plot of the series (in the foreword to Endless Nights) as "The Lord of Dreams learns that one must change or die, and makes his decision." So good luck with that!

Did I leave some of your favorites off the list. Leave me your comments and tell me what comic series would make a cool television series below!
